In the U.S.A., a great number of people - mostly men - are on death row, awaiting execution. This wait can last for years, often decades, during which they live under conditions that violate their basic human dignity. In many cases, relatives and friends turn away over the course of time, if not right from the beginning. So the world literally stays outside.
The prisoner, however, is still a human being, no matter what he or she may have done in the past. With every person that reaches out to a death row prisoner in writing, a new window to the world opens. Such a pen pal relationship can develop from a shy, formal exchange into an intensive, lively friendship that enriches both sides in wonderful ways. Not all prisoners are good at expressing themselves in writing, but they all long to be perceived as human beings with thoughts and feelings - just the way we all do.
We are always looking for people who would like to become friends with prisoners who have to live on death row for many long years!
